Summary: "The journals are one of the few daily accounts of activities in the Hawaiian Islands for the years 1823-1855. For the early years, it is the only record of the arrival and departure of ships, notations on the sandalwood trade and identifications of the merchants and traders in Hawaiian and Pacific commerce..."

"...In the past, the journal has been used in manuscript form. With this publication, the first volume is now made available to the public. The period covered is from November 1823 to September 1829.... Besides business, Reynolds commented on social activities, on persons and personalities. He, himself, was known among the Hawaiians and foreigners as a colorful character who wore distinctive clothes, who held dancing classes and played the violin for the occasions. He was a severe critic of the American Protestant missionaries and a chronicler extraordinaire."
