Summary: |
"...Much of Kauai's rich lowland shell fauna has been preserved as fossils in sand deposits located inland.
These fossil beds have been the source of the majority of new species and subspecies
described in recent years. Because these areas have now become prime sites for development,
many undescribed land shells may be lost before Kauai's faunal history has been recorded adequately....." "Most of Kauai's native snails are terrestrial, dwelling in litter, on moss,
among roots of plants, and under logs and rock debris. Because of this habitat
preference, they are especially vulnerable to rooting and trampling by domestic
and feral animals. At present the number of native land snails
inhabiting Kauai appears to be declining...." CLICK THE "MORE IMAGES" LINK ABOVE TO SEE MORE OF THIS TITLE |
