Summary: The author continued his studies and lived in other islands of the Pacific. "...Thus he learned some of the native lore not generally told the ordinary white colonial. His continued studies of things Pacific and his more extensive field explorations have convinced him of two facts: 1. Many of the plants found growing in the Hawaiian Islands grow likewise in other islands of the Pacific or have close relatives there. 2. Many of the customs of the ancient Hawaiians are identical with the customs of the present inhabitants of other Pacific Islands or may be considered modifications of such customs. This resemblance is particularly close throughout Polynesia, the ocean realm east of 180 degrees longitude. It is less close--though still striking--in Melanesia, the area west of Polynesia and mostly south of the Equator, likewise in Micronesia, the area west of Polynesia and north of Melanesia. The war with japan has created such interest in the native customs and in the plants of the Pacific that the present volume has been reproduced as a quick, inexpensive, war-time edition to meet this demand under the new sub-title of 'Plants and Customs of the South Seas.'
